ABSTRACT
Database technology is one of the most rapidly growing areas of computer and information science. It is nothing but a computer based record keeping system. Its overall function is to record and a maintain information. In other words a systematic collection of data, organized in a such a way that abstracting information is very efficient is called database. The database together with some methods of manipulating the data is called a database system. Databases are designed to manage large bodies of information. The management of data involves both the definition of structure for the storage of information. The computerized information/ data processing is useful to handle large volume of data. In such applications manual processing is slow, tedious and error-pron. Computer can as sure speed and accuracy. Also it aliases from maintaining large stack of papers. Information processing involves transforming data (raw facts) into information. Distinguishing between the data and information is per requisite for understanding the way the data is processed. Computer always process data but easily information.
INTRODUCTION
In right words the library itself is huge collection of data. of course the data is of variety. The library has to satisfy the needs of the variety of users. Some users can be satisfied by primary type of information; however some particular class of user is always in the need of some special and pin-pointed information. The job of a librarian becomes more critical and challenging here. In general there may be controversy about the usage of computer but for the library management is a great blessing.
The main intentions of the information services are to support the national development. They should be designed to serve the community to improve it's overall quality of life, which would mean progress and prosperity. A database system provides the institution with centralized control of it's operational data. This is in contrast to the situation that prevails in many enterprises or institution who conventional file management system, where typically each application has its own private files, so that the operational data is widely dispersed and therefore probably difficult to control. But a database provides an integrated and shared utilization of data.
Library is very important agency in the world of information, which collects stores and provides information for retrieval. The database contain the information about books, periodicals, article index/ abstracts, proceedings and conference report, microfilm/microfiche material, AV/VC material, film material and so on. In short the information included in the form of printed and non printed material included in the database. Any user can use this he/she her save time. Information regarding this material should be feeded once to the database, then user can retrieve it in any fashion for example :
